Amnesty International Condemns Benue Easter Attack

Amnesty International condemned the attack on Easter Sunday in Mbalom, Gwer East Local Government Area, Benue State, where gunmen killed at least 10 people and injured dozens more. The organization described the incident as part of a recurring failure of Nigerian authorities to protect residents.

The attack occurred during Easter celebrations, with gunmen invading the community, resulting in the destruction of homes and shops, and leaving many families searching for missing persons. In a statement released on Monday, Amnesty International emphasized that the situation reflects a broader pattern of insecurity in the state.

The organization criticized the government's response, noting that frequent attacks have deprived thousands of people of their rights to life, physical integrity, and access to livelihoods. Approximately 500,000 people are displaced in the state, living in camps with limited access to water, sanitation, food, and healthcare.

The attack in Mbalom is part of a wider wave of violence disrupting Easter celebrations across northern Nigeria.
