Amnesty International Demands Probe into Teen's Death

Amnesty International has demanded an urgent investigation into the death of 16-year-old Bishir Malam Dauda, who was reportedly tortured to death while in the custody of Katsina police. Bishir was arrested at the Yankara Police Outpost in Faskari Local Government Area for allegedly stealing a bag of soybeans.

According to Amnesty International's statement on Facebook, the investigation revealed that Bishir was subjected to severe beatings with an iron rod and a pick. He was arrested on May 7, 2026, based on a friend's mention during the police investigation into the theft, and was unaccompanied by an adult.

The police allegedly tortured him to confess, which he refused to do until he became lifeless. Following his death, his body was deposited at the Yankara Primary Healthcare Centre.

Amnesty International described this incident as part of a broader pattern of human rights violations by police, accusing them of operating with impunity and fostering fear among citizens. The organization has called for the identification and prosecution of officers involved in this incident.
