Amnesty International Demands Probe After Maiduguri Girl's Death

Amnesty International has urged Nigerian authorities to conduct an urgent investigation into the reckless use of firearms by military personnel, which resulted in the death of a 14-year-old girl in Maiduguri, Borno State. The incident occurred on Saturday, April 4, when the secondary school student was struck by a stray bullet while inside her home.

Reports indicate that the bullet was fired by military personnel who allegedly shot into the air during a nearby celebratory event. The girl was reportedly not near the celebration; she was at home with her family after applying henna, while her mother was preparing for a wedding.

Following the tragedy, the girl was buried on Sunday morning at a cemetery in Maiduguri. Amnesty International emphasized the need for a transparent and impartial investigation into the shooting and called for those responsible to be held accountable for their actions.
