Amnesty International Alleges Extrajudicial Killings by Nigerian Military in South-East

Amnesty International has accused the Nigerian military of carrying out extrajudicial killings in the South-East region. The organization claims to have verified evidence of unlawful killings, torture, enforced disappearances, and arbitrary arrests by the Nigerian police and military, as well as the regional security outfit Ebube Agu.

The report, titled "Decade of Impunity: Attacks and Unlawful Killings in Southeast Nigeria," documents deaths from January 2021 to June 2023. The Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Markus Kangye, rejected the report's findings, stating that the military does not engage in extrajudicial killings.

Amnesty International has interviewed 100 people, with 95 of them reporting similar incidents. The organization has sent a letter to the military detailing the allegations and requesting input, but has not received a response.

Amnesty International emphasized that the report is not biased against the armed forces, but aims to bring justice to the victims of violence in the region.
