Kano Government Denies Amnesty International's Claims

The Kano State government, led by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, has dismissed allegations made by Amnesty International concerning repression and human rights violations in the state. The claims, which suggest a pattern of arrests and harassment of individuals criticizing the government, were described as false and misleading by Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs.

The government insists that it does not direct security agencies to intimidate dissenters and emphasizes its commitment to protecting fundamental human rights, including freedom of expression as guaranteed by Nigeria's constitution. However, the administration noted that freedom of expression does not extend to acts of defamation, incitement, or spreading false information that could disrupt public peace.

The state government promotes civic engagement and media freedom while encouraging constructive criticism as essential for democratic development. It also clarified that security agencies operate independently within their statutory mandates, addressing issues like cyberbullying and defamation based on credible complaints.
