Kano State Government Rejects Amnesty International Claims

The Kano State government, under the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, issued a statement on Thursday categorically rejecting allegations made by Amnesty International concerning escalating human rights abuses. The government described the claims as gross misrepresentations of facts and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting fundamental human rights, including the right to freedom of expression as guaranteed by the Nigerian Constitution.

Amnesty International had previously accused the Kano State government of using the Department of State Services (DSS) to arrest, detain, and harass individuals who criticize the governor. The state government emphasized that security agencies, including the DSS, operate within their statutory mandates and that any arrests are based on credible allegations of wrongdoing.

Furthermore, the government condemned the misuse of social media for spreading falsehoods and reiterated its support for measures taken by security agencies to combat cyberbullying and defamation.
