Michael Adenuga's Globacom Transforms Nigeria's Telecoms

Michael Adeniyi Agbolade Ishola Adenuga Jr., nicknamed "the Bull," is celebrated for his significant contributions to Nigeria's telecommunications sector through his company, Globacom. After facing a setback in 1999 when his company lost a GSM licence, Adenuga successfully bid for the Second National Operator licence in 2002.

Globacom launched its mobile services on August 29, 2003, entering a competitive market dominated by MTN and Econet. Notably, Globacom introduced per-second billing, which challenged the prevailing minute-based billing system and prompted competitors to adopt similar practices.

This strategic move marked a significant shift in the telecommunications landscape. Additionally, Adenuga's vision extended beyond mobile services with the investment in the Glo-1 submarine fibre-optic cable, which connects Lagos to international points, further solidifying Globacom's position in the industry.
