Anambra State Launches Waterway Clearance to Prevent Flooding

The Anambra State Government has announced the commencement of a clearance exercise for waterways and drainage channels across the state, scheduled to begin on April 27. This initiative, led by Tochukwu Obodogha, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, aims to prevent flooding and environmental degradation ahead of the rainy season.

The exercise will cover all 21 local government areas and is part of measures to ensure that drainage systems are free from silt, debris, and waste materials that could obstruct the flow of rainwater. Residents, including landlords, religious organizations, market unions, and schools, are urged to actively participate in the clearance process within their premises and communities.

Proper disposal of debris is emphasized to avoid secondary pollution, with warnings of appropriate sanctions for non-compliance. The initiative follows a flood warning issued by the Federal Ministry of Environment, which identified several communities in Anambra as high-risk areas.
