Anambra Approves Imo-Awka Festival for May 23, 2026

The Anambra State Government has officially approved the celebration of the Imo-Awka festival, set to take place on May 23, 2026. This decision follows an earlier proposal to shift the festival date due to potential security issues coinciding with primary elections.

The government, through a letter signed by Minister of Culture and Tourism Udorji Amedu, communicated the approval while urging the Awka community to conduct the festival respectfully and without obstructing major roads. The letter, which was shared with the Awka Development Union and the Ozo Awka Society, highlighted the importance of maintaining law and order during the event.

The government warned against the use of dangerous weapons by masqueraders and emphasized that no harassment or violence would be tolerated. The approval reflects the government's commitment to promoting cultural heritage while ensuring public safety during significant events in Awka, the capital city of Anambra State.
