Anambra Government Ends Monday Sit-at-Home, Threatens Salary Cuts for Non-Compliant Workers

The Anambra State Government has terminated the Monday sit-at-home practice, which originated in August 2021 due to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) campaign. The government has threatened workers, especially teachers, with salary deductions or complete loss for failing to report to work on Mondays.

Lovelin Mgbemena, the Secretary of the Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB), issued a circular enforcing the executive order to end the sit-at-home practice. The decision was made during the state executive council retreat on January 21, 2026, under the leadership of Governor Chukwuma Soludo.

The directive applies to both teaching and non-teaching staff across the state's educational institutions. The Anambra State Government emphasized the need for strict compliance with the new order to abolish the Monday sit-at-home practice.
