Anambra LGs Dispute Over Limca Road Renaming

A clash has erupted between Idemili North and Onitsha North Local Government Areas in Anambra State regarding the renaming of Limca Road to Ichi Emeka Anyaoku Road. The renaming ceremony, officiated by Stanlei Nkwoka, Chairman of Idemili North LGA, took place at Nkpor Junction.

Nkwoka highlighted the contributions of Emeka Anyaoku, a former Commonwealth Secretary-General, to the community. However, Onitsha North LGA, led by Chairman Toni Nwora, issued a public notice declaring the renaming illegal and unconstitutional, asserting that Idemili North LGA overstepped its jurisdiction.

Nwora cited the 1999 Constitution, emphasizing that Limca Road falls under Onitsha North's administrative control. He warned that any attempt to impose the new name would be resisted legally.

In response, Nkwoka reaffirmed Idemili North's authority to rename the road, acknowledging that while part of the road extends into Onitsha North, the decision to rename it honors Anyaoku's legacy and is within their jurisdiction.
