Anambra Government Launches Committee to Combat Maternal Deaths

The Anambra State Government has inaugurated the State Maternal, Perinatal and Child Death Surveillance and Response (MPCDSR) Steering Committee to strengthen surveillance and response to preventable maternal, perinatal, and child deaths. Dr Afam Obidike, the Commissioner for Health, emphasized the committee's role in identifying causes of these deaths and implementing preventive measures.

The inauguration took place in Awka, attended by health officials, development partners, and stakeholders. Dr Obiageli Uchebo, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, highlighted the need for evidence-based improvements in maternal and child health outcomes, focusing on areas such as antenatal care and emergency response.

UNICEF's representative, Mr Stan Osun, and representatives from the World Health Organisation and Achieving Health Nigeria Initiative pledged their support. Mrs Ijeoma Ikeanyionwu, MPCDSR Desk Officer, noted that selected health facilities would pilot the system and report regularly to the state, addressing issues like neonatal deaths and data discrepancies.
