Sokoto State Launches Committees to Combat Maternal Mortality

The Sokoto State Government, in collaboration with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), inaugurated State Steering and Local Government Committees on Maternal, Perinatal and Child Death Surveillance and Response (MPCDSR). The initiative aims to enhance the review of maternal, perinatal, and child deaths and improve responses to preventable fatalities.

Dr. Faruk Umar Abubakar, the Commissioner for Health and Chairman of the State Steering Committee, emphasized the need for a multi-sectoral approach to effectively address these issues. He was represented by Permanent Secretary Alhaji Ibrahim Haliru Dingyadi during the inauguration.

The Executive Secretary of the Sokoto State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr. Bilyaminu Yari Sifawa, expressed optimism about the initiative's potential impact. UNFPA State Team Lead, Dr. Rabiatu Sageer, highlighted the initiative's goal of saving women's lives during pregnancy and childbirth and assured ongoing technical support through SARAH funding.

The inauguration was followed by a two-day orientation for Local Government Technical Working Groups.
