Anambra State Launches Initiative for Sensory Health Care

The Anambra State Government has established a technical working group to strengthen sensory health care services, particularly for early diagnosis and treatment of sensory-related health conditions. Dr.

Afam Obidik, representing the state governor, inaugurated the committee in Awka, describing the initiative as a strategic step to improve access to quality sensory health care services. The group is tasked with providing a coordinated framework to plan, implement, and monitor interventions aimed at enhancing sensory health care delivery and reducing preventable vision and hearing impairments.

Dr. Chioma Ezeonyeka, the program manager for eye and sensory health, identified cataract, glaucoma, and untreated refractive errors as major causes of blindness.

The 2026 annual operational plan includes free eye and ear screening, distribution of spectacles, and a glaucoma awareness campaign. Professor Sebastian Nwosu emphasized the need for wider stakeholder involvement to promote sensory health awareness and attract donor support for health care programs.
