Ancient African remedy shows promise against tuberculosis and asthma

A compound found in African wormwood, traditionally used for medicinal purposes, has shown promise in treating asthma by reducing airway inflammation and improving respiratory function. Researchers believe this compound could complement traditional asthma treatments by improving airflow and decreasing the frequency and severity of asthma attacks.

The antioxidative effect of the compound may also protect lung tissue from oxidative stress, contributing to overall respiratory health. The study, published in a comprehensive review, identified 58 plants and 32 herbal extracts with antiasthmatic effects, including African wormwood.

The researchers suggest that further investigation into these compounds could lead to new treatments for asthma. Additionally, the compound has shown potential in treating tuberculosis by killing bacteria in both active and dormant states.

Further research is needed to improve the potency of the compound for potential use in drug development.
