Anglican Church Faces Divisions Over Female Leadership

The Anglican Church is experiencing significant divisions as rebel clerics in Nigeria have chosen a rival to the first female Archbishop of Canterbury, Sarah Mullally. This decision comes ahead of Mullally's installation ceremony later this month and has sparked a contentious debate within the Anglican Communion.

The GAFCON movement, which describes itself as a global movement for authentic Anglicanism, has been at the forefront of this dissent, asserting that the church's leadership should remain male. Senior clerics, including Uche Nweke, have expressed strong opposition to female leadership, citing biblical precedents.

The divisions have intensified since 2023, particularly following disagreements over issues such as same-sex unions and the leadership of previous Archbishop Justin Welby. Diarmaid MacCulloch, an emeritus professor of church history, noted that the selection of a male leader by GAFCON reflects a broader dissatisfaction with the Anglican Church's direction.

The situation poses a risk of further schism within the global church.
