Northern Governors Meet Buhari Ahead of 2023 Election, No Anointed Successor Chosen

During a closed-door meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari, former Chief of Staff, Ibrahim Gambari, disclosed that 19 Northern governors agreed on a power shift to the South ahead of the 2023 presidential election. However, there was no anointed candidate chosen during the meeting.

Gambari clarified that the governors sought to ascertain Buhari's position on the succession race but emphasized that the President did not impose any successor. He also mentioned that former Vice President Atiku Abubakar contested against Bola Tinubu in the APC presidential primaries in June 2022, which Tinubu eventually won before defeating Atiku in the 2023 presidential election.
