APC attacks Amaechi over claims of financial hardship after leaving office

Rotimi Amaechi, running as the African Democratic Congress's vice-presidential candidate in 2027, faces criticism from the All Progressives Congress over recent public remarks concerning his financial circumstances following his departure from government service. The ruling party's National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, released a statement Sunday challenging Amaechi's disclosure that insufficient funds prevented him from covering expenses related to his late mother's medical care.
During a Channels TV appearance, the former Rivers State governor attributed his inability to provide treatment for his mother to economic hardship stemming from the administration's fiscal policies. The APC countered by suggesting this claim undermines Amaechi's candidacy for the vice-presidency, contending that his professional life has centered on leveraging governmental positions for financial gain.
The party pointed out that even after spending decades in various public roles, Amaechi encountered serious monetary constraints merely three years following his exit from office. Throughout his tenure, party officials noted, Amaechi's livelihood has depended on accessing state resources through government employment.
The APC views his 2027 vice-presidential ambition as an attempt to perpetuate this dependence on public funds instead of developing autonomous wealth. The ruling party questioned whether someone seeking Nigeria's second-highest office possesses the personal financial standing such a position demands, escalating its criticism accordingly.
Dame Ezinne Mary Oduah Amaechi's passing has emerged as a flashpoint in the political struggle between the APC and rival factions preparing for the forthcoming general elections. This dispute underscores broader disagreements about fiscal responsibility and personal wealth management separating the competing political camps.
