The Nigerian Exchange closed marginally lower on Monday, with the ASI declining 0.23% to 250,544.17 points, reflecting cautious investor positioning despite robust trading activity. Five gainers led by TRIPPLEG's 9.87% surge offset losses in the financial and logistics sectors, with FGSUK2027S3 tumbling 16.72%.

The Nigerian bourse opened a new trading week on a subdued note, with the All-Share Index shedding 57.64 points to close at 250,544.17 points. While the decline was modest, the session illustrated growing selectivity among market participants as they navigate sector-specific headwinds.

On the positive side, small-cap stocks commanded investor attention. TRIPPLEG led gainers with a 9.87% jump of ₦0.23 to ₦2.56, while LEARNAFRCA climbed 9.80% (₦0.75 gain to ₦8.40) and LIVESTOCK surged 9.55% by ₦0.85 to ₦9.75. These rallies suggest retail interest in value-priced equities, though their collective impact proved insufficient to sustain the broader index.

The losses tell a different story. FGSUK2027S3, a sovereign bond note, collapsed 16.72% to ₦79.03—a sharp ₦15.87 decline that may reflect concerns about interest rate trajectories or macroeconomic headwinds. CMFC's 9.80% drop (₦0.44) and ABCTRANS's 9.46% slide (₦0.70) signal weakness in financial services and logistics, sectors sensitive to cost pressures.

Volume trading remained solid at 770.8 million shares worth ₦33.8 billion across 48,803 deals, with ACCESSCORP dominating at 433.5 million shares. This liquidity depth provided a stabilizing anchor despite directional uncertainty.

Market capitalization settled at ₦162.67 trillion, reflecting the index's marginal retreat.

Watch for sector rotation patterns in tomorrow's session, particularly whether defensive stocks can maintain momentum against renewed financial sector volatility.
