Tinubu Seeks to Block Release of FBI Investigation Records

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has filed a request with the US District Court for the District of Columbia to prevent the release of records related to past investigations involving him, arguing that such disclosure would violate his privacy rights. Tinubu intervened in a case initiated by Aaron Greenspan, founder of PlainSite, who submitted Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests for records concerning Tinubu, including the “entire FBI file” and interview records from 1992 to 1993.

In April 2025, Judge Beryl Howell ruled that the FBI and Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) had improperly refused to confirm or deny the existence of records related to Tinubu and ordered them to process non-exempt documents. The agencies released thousands of pages with redactions.

Tinubu's legal team contends that Greenspan's requests focus on personal information rather than governmental transparency. Meanwhile, the Allied Peoples Movement, represented by Yusuf Abubakar, and the Elites Network for Sustainable Development, led by Moshood Lanre Osho, have called for the report's release, emphasizing its importance for Nigeria's security and democratic development ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
