Arthur Okonkwo Aims for AFCON Glory with Nigeria

Arthur Okonkwo, the Charlton Athletic goalkeeper, discussed his aspirations regarding the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and a personal conversation with Arsenal's Bukayo Saka after a Champions League final loss. Okonkwo was selected by coach Eric Chelle for the Nigeria National Team's squad for the 2026 Unity Cup in London, where he made his debut at The Valley.

He helped Nigeria secure the trophy, marking their fourth victory in the competition's history, while keeping clean sheets in both group matches against Jamaica. Following this, Okonkwo participated in two friendlies in June, including a 2-2 draw with Poland and a 2-1 loss to Portugal.

Despite a strong performance last season with nine clean sheets in 35 Championship appearances, Okonkwo approached the Nigeria camp with a mindset to learn from established goalkeepers like Francis Uzoho and Maduka Okoye. With Nigeria not qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, Okonkwo's focus is on ending the AFCON title drought, as Nigeria last won in 2013.
