Okonkwo Joins Super Eagles for AFCON Qualifiers

On September 7, 2023, Charlton Athletic announced that goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo has been included in Eric Chelle's squad for Nigeria's opening matches in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau. Okonkwo, 24, who developed through Arsenal's youth academy and has had loan spells at Crewe Alexandra and Sturm Graz, joined Charlton on a season-long loan this summer, making four appearances for the club.

He has earned two senior caps for Nigeria, both of which were clean sheets. His recent performances in the Unity Cup, where he helped Nigeria secure a 2-0 victory over the Warriors and a 3-0 win against Jamaica, have bolstered his case for selection.

However, competition for the goalkeeper position is intense, with established first-choice options and Maduka Okoye also in the mix. Nigeria missed the 2026 FIFA World Cup, making the upcoming qualifiers crucial for rebuilding momentum.

Nigeria will host Madagascar in Uyo on September 25 and face Guinea-Bissau on September 29, with only the top team from Group L earning an automatic AFCON berth.
