ASRTI Demands Immediate Payment for Nigeria Airways Retirees

The Aviation Safety Round Table Initiative (ASRTI) has called for the immediate payment of outstanding entitlements owed to more than 4,000 former employees of the defunct Nigeria Airways Limited. ASRTI's President, Air Commodore (rtd) Ademola Onitiju, described the delays as a grave injustice, noting that many retirees are elderly and have faced over two decades of uncertainty since the airline's liquidation in April 2003.

While some payments were made by the previous administration of late President Muhammadu Buhari, over N30 billion remains outstanding. ASRTI expressed concern over the human cost of these delays, with many retirees reportedly dying from age-related illnesses.

In December 2025, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo (SAN), announced that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had approved the payment of these entitlements, which was to be forwarded to the Ministry of Finance. ASRTI urged immediate action to release the payments and called for accountability for any officials responsible for the delays.
