ASUU and Nigerian Government Seal Historic Agreement After 16-Year Negotiation

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Nigerian government have finalized a landmark agreement addressing long-standing disputes over salaries, pensions, and research funding in public universities. The agreement includes a 40% salary increase for academic staff, a new pension model, and the establishment of a national research council.

The accord also reinforces university autonomy, academic freedom, and merit-based leadership. The agreement, effective from January 1, 2026, aims to end victimization of academic staff and prioritize academic governance based on merit.

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has expressed support for ASUU's advocacy efforts.
