ASUU-FG Agreement Ends 16-Year Crisis in Nigerian Universities

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and the Federal Government of Nigeria have finalized an agreement to end a 16-year crisis that has plagued the country's public universities since 2009. The agreement, led by ASUU leadership Dr.

Tunji Alausa, will take effect on January 1, 2026, marking a significant shift from past negotiations characterized by ad hoc approaches. Key points of the agreement include a 40% salary increase for academic staff, pension reforms allowing professors to retire at 70 with pension equivalent to their final annual salary, and the introduction of a pension fund framework.

ASUU President Chris Piwuna reported the agreement also addresses issues of university autonomy and research funding.
