ASUU Rejects N10m Loan Scheme, Threatens Nationwide Protests

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has rejected the Federal Government's new N10 million loan scheme for tertiary institution staff, calling it a ploy to distract from unresolved issues. The union threatened nationwide protests in response to the scheme.

The Federal Government launched the Tertiary Institutions Staff Support Fund loan program, which was criticized by ASUU during a National Executive Council meeting at Usmanu Danfodio University in Sokoto. ASUU President Christopher Piwuna stated that members were not consulted about the scheme and emphasized that what they needed was the release of withheld salaries and the conclusion of negotiations on their welfare and conditions.

The rejection of the loan scheme indicates a growing tension between ASUU and the government.
