ASUU Threatens New Strike Over Unfulfilled Agreement

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a warning of a potential fresh strike, citing the Nigerian government's failure to implement the December 2025 agreement. This warning was articulated in a statement following a meeting of the union's National Executive Council (NEC) at Modibbo Adama University on May 9-10.

ASUU President Christoph Piwuna accused the government of not inaugurating the Implementation Monitoring Committee (IMC) designed to ensure the smooth execution of the agreement and prevent bureaucratic bottlenecks. The union expressed concerns over the delay in implementing the agreement, which includes provisions for academic staff salaries and welfare.

ASUU has previously raised alarms about the government's failure to mainstream earnings for academic staff in the 2026 budget. The union highlighted unresolved welfare issues, including non-payment of salary awards and withheld salaries linked to previous strike actions.

ASUU has vowed to ensure that its members fully benefit from the gains of the eight-year-long negotiations from 2017 to 2025.
