ASUU Threatens Action Over Unpaid Salaries to FG

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened the Nigerian federal government regarding unpaid salaries, emphasizing that the government has not fully implemented the December 2025 agreement. ASUU President stated that the union expects full payment of salaries, including allowances, by the end of March.

Lecturers are increasingly frustrated with the delays in implementing the agreement, which includes a 40% salary increase and improved welfare provisions for academic staff. The union clarified that it has not issued a four-day ultimatum, but it adheres to strict procedures for industrial action.

The incomplete salary payments particularly affect lecturers on sabbatical visits, who have not been fully compensated due to funding constraints. ASUU also highlighted the government's prioritization of political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections over educational funding.

The union warns that failure to fully implement the agreement by the end of March will prompt a response, as the government has shown little indication of meeting the agreed targets.
