ASUU Threatens Strike Over Unpaid Salaries and Issues

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a warning that it may resume its suspended nationwide strike “without any further notice” unless the federal and state governments urgently resolve outstanding issues affecting university lecturers. In a statement signed by ASUU President Prof. Christopher Piwuna, the union cited poor implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU Agreement, unpaid salaries, and unremitted third-party deductions as critical issues.

An emergency National Executive Council meeting held on September 5, 2026, concluded that the union could call its members out on strike imminently if these issues remain unaddressed. ASUU noted that three-and-a-half months of salaries are still unpaid, despite President Bola Tinubu releasing four months.

The union also criticized state governments for their slow implementation of the 2025 agreement, while commending some states for progress. Additionally, ASUU condemned the two-year tenure extension granted to Osun State University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Clement Adebooye, arguing it sets a bad precedent.
