ASUU Issues Ultimatum to FG Over Salary Disputes

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has warned of a potential nationwide strike if the Federal Government and state governments do not urgently resolve issues related to lecturers' salaries, deductions, and the implementation of the 2025 agreement. This warning was issued in a statement by ASUU's National President, Prof. Christopher Piwuna, following an emergency meeting of its National Executive Council on September 5, 2026, at the Festus Iyayi National Secretariat Complex, University of Abuja.

ASUU stated that lecturers are owed three-and-a-half months of withheld salaries from a total of seven-and-a-half months during the previous administration. Although the current administration has paid four months, the unpaid balance has significantly lost value due to naira devaluation and inflation.

The union also accused the government of failing to remit deductions for pensions and other contributions, amounting to billions of naira. ASUU warned that it is prepared to call out its members if these issues are not addressed promptly.
