Nigerian Government and ASUU Seal New Deal to Improve Welfare of Academic Staff

The Nigerian Government and ASUU have finalized a new deal after renegotiating the 2009 FGN-ASUU agreement, ending a long-standing dispute over welfare and academic funding in public universities. The agreement, effective from January 1, 2026, includes a 40% salary increase for academic staff, enhanced pension benefits, and the introduction of a new university fund model.

It also emphasizes stronger university autonomy, academic freedom, and research funding. The agreement aims to address past industrial actions and ensure the well-being of academic staff in Nigerian public universities.
