South Africa's President Ramaphosa Responds to 27 Deaths in Shootings

Over the weekend, South Africa experienced two mass shootings that resulted in the deaths of at least 27 individuals. The first incident occurred on Saturday night at a bar in Wedela, a township southwest of Johannesburg, where eight unidentified assailants armed with AK-47 rifles opened fire, killing 17 people and injuring 15 others.

The victims included 13 men and 4 women. The attackers also set two vehicles ablaze before fleeing the scene.

Local residents attributed the violence to competition among gangs over the illicit gold mining trade. The second shooting took place at a barbecue venue near Cape Town at midnight, where 10 people were killed, with five dying on the spot and the others in the hospital.

Eleven additional individuals were wounded. The South African Police Service has launched investigations to apprehend the suspects involved in both incidents.

President Cyril Ramaphosa responded to the violence by instructing security forces to take decisive action against criminality, emphasizing that the country cannot tolerate such rampant gun violence.
