The African Democratic Congress presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar has blamed Nigeria's declining security on what he characterizes as the federal government's inadequate handling of banditry and terrorism. His media office released the statement on Sunday, following the passing of retired Major General Abubakar Rabe.

This former military spokesperson and director of defence information succumbed while in the custody of armed bandits. According to available reports, General Rabe and his wife were kidnapped on May 30, 2026, in Katsina State.

The death of this former military officer while captive led Abubakar to call it a sorrowful blow to the nation. He emphasized that it underscores Nigeria's vulnerable state, with no citizens—irrespective of rank or prior military service—receiving proper safeguards.

Abubakar also pointed to recent assaults by terrorists in Chibok, Borno State, highlighting the scale of insecurity nationwide. Through his statement, Abubakar contended that Nigeria continues to forfeit previously achieved victories in countering terrorism and banditry from prior governments.

He criticized how the federal government has managed the security emergency, asserting that the episode demonstrates inadequacy in protecting people. While the former vice president did not outline concrete policy proposals, he stressed the urgency of stronger governmental measures.
