Atiku Condemns Attacks on Opposition Figures Ahead of 2027 Race

The ADC presidential hopeful has called for investigations after reported assaults on rival opposition candidates in separate incidents across Nigeria.

Atiku Abubakar, the African Democratic Congress presidential candidate for 2027, has publicly denounced violent incidents targeting opposition politicians and their supporters. On Saturday, the former vice-president responded to reports of an assault involving Omoyele Sowore, the African Action Congress presidential candidate, in Ekiti State, as well as a separate attack on Manir Muhammad Dan'iya, the ADC's governorship candidate in Sokoto State.

In statements shared on social media, Atiku characterised both incidents as unacceptable and damaging to Nigeria's democratic system. He directed his criticism at the ruling All Progressives Congress, arguing that the party has orchestrated a pattern of intimidation against opposition voices in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections.

Atiku framed the attacks as part of a broader campaign to suppress dissenting political movements. The former vice-president called on President Bola Tinubu's administration to launch immediate and transparent investigations into both incidents.

He stressed that such violence against political opponents creates an unsafe environment for opposition activity and undermines the foundation of competitive electoral politics. Atiku's statement suggested that the incidents represent an attempt by the ruling party to maintain dominance through means other than electoral competition.

The reports of these attacks come as various opposition parties position themselves for the 2027 presidential and gubernatorial contests. Both the AAC and ADC have emerged as significant voices in Nigeria's opposition coalition.

Atiku's public condemnation marks an effort to draw attention to what opposition figures perceive as systematic efforts to constrain their political participation and campaigning activities.
