Atiku Abubakar Proposes Controversial Fuel Subsidy Plan

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice President and Presidential Candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), has made a controversial shift in his policy regarding fuel subsidies. Previously an advocate for the removal of fuel subsidies and deregulation of the petroleum sector, Atiku now proposes to restore the petrol subsidy as part of his Atiku Economic Recovery Plan (AERP).

This plan suggests shifting subsidies from importation to production, providing incentives to local refineries contingent on passing savings to consumers. The program would operate under a strict budget approved by the National Assembly.

Critics argue that this policy is a disingenuous attempt to capitalize on current economic discontent for political gain, as fuel subsidies are seen as regressive and detrimental to Nigeria's fiscal health. Historically, such subsidies have led to financial strain on state and local governments due to deductions from national oil revenues before reaching the Federation Account, a pattern Atiku's model appears to replicate.
