Atiku Abubakar Proposes New Fuel Subsidy Plan for Nigeria

Atiku Abubakar has proposed a new approach to Nigeria's fuel subsidy system, emphasizing a shift from an import-based regime to one focused on domestic production. His plan suggests that Nigerian refineries receive domestic crude under preferential conditions, contingent upon meeting obligations related to production, efficiency, and transparency.

Each subsidized barrel would be traceable throughout the supply chain, with a fiscal ceiling, parliamentary appropriation, independent auditing, and public disclosure. This proposal aims to learn from the failures of the previous subsidy system, which was marked by corruption and inefficiency.

The removal of the old subsidy led to economic pain for citizens, with rising transportation and energy costs. Abubakar argues that the government should prioritize maximizing national prosperity rather than merely increasing crude oil export prices.

The proposal seeks to stimulate economic activities by lowering energy costs, thereby enhancing indirect economic benefits such as business expansion and increased consumer spending.
