Atiku's Team Says Amaechi VP Unveiling Delayed by Travel Schedule

The African Democratic Congress has confirmed that former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi will serve as vice-presidential running mate to presidential candidate Atiku Abubakar in the 2027 general election, though his official unveiling has been pushed back. Abubakar's media aide, Abdulrashe Shehu, explained that the delay stems from the presidential candidate's current travel obligations, with the formal presentation ceremony scheduled for shortly after Abubakar returns from his trip.

Shehu's statement was issued to counter claims circulating on social media suggesting that Amaechi had refused the ticket or that the ADC had not yet accepted his candidacy. The aide explicitly denied these assertions, stating that both Amaechi and the party hierarchy remain committed to the partnership.

The ADC's National Public Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, had previously announced Amaechi's acceptance of the role following the party's presidential primary election. Amaechi's path to accepting the vice-presidential nomination involved a notable shift in position.

During the ADC's presidential primary process, the former Transport Minister initially questioned aspects of the electoral arrangement but ultimately embraced the consensus decision to take on the running mate role. This reversal came after consultations within party structures, according to official party communications.

The ADC is positioning itself as a challenger to the ruling All Progressives Congress ahead of the 2027 elections. With Amaechi's candidacy now formally confirmed by the party, the next phase involves the scheduled unveiling ceremony, contingent on Abubakar's return from his current business engagement.
