Australia Issues Guidance for Visa Extensions

The Australian government has released guidance for foreigners who wish to remain in Australia beyond their current visa's expiry date. Individuals must apply for a new visa, with options depending on their specific circumstances and the conditions of their current visa.

The first step for visa holders nearing expiry is to verify the exact expiry date and check for any conditions that may prevent further stay. This information can be accessed via VEVO, the myVEVO app, or the visa grant letter.

For those on an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA), the government advises using the "Check an ETA" service. If a visa has a condition preventing further stay, the holder must leave Australia before the visa expires, as applying for a new visa while still in the country is not permitted.

However, for those without such restrictions, applying for a new visa while the current visa is still valid may be possible. Some visas also provide a direct pathway to another visa type.
