Australia and Japan Sign $7 Billion Warship Contract

On Saturday, Australia and Japan formalized a $7 billion military contract, with Defense Ministers Richard Marles of Australia and Shinjiro Koizumi of Japan signing a memorandum in Melbourne. This deal, which includes the supply of three upgraded Mogami-class multi-role frigates by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, is part of a broader commitment to enhance naval capabilities in response to China's expanding military presence in the Indo-Pacific region.

The contract, first agreed upon in August, signifies Japan's departure from its military export ban established in 2014, reflecting a fundamental shift in its defense posture. The frigates are designed to hunt submarines, strike surface ships, and provide air defense, with the first three ships to be built in Japan and the remaining five constructed at the Henderson shipyard in Perth, Western Australia.

This long-term commitment aims to bolster Australia's naval fleet independence and strengthen defense ties between the two nations amid increasing geopolitical tensions.
