AVERTING ANOTHER FLOOD DISASTER

Despite warnings from the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), flooding continues to devastate communities across Nigeria. Recent incidents in Ebonyi, Lagos, Adamawa, and Kano States have left hundreds homeless and struggling to rebuild their lives.

The lack of a clear plan to mitigate the impact of floods has led to widespread destruction and loss of life. Nnimmo Bassey, Executive Director of Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF), emphasizes the urgent need to build resilience against flooding, which poses a significant threat to lives, infrastructure, and livelihoods.

The history of devastating floods in Nigeria, dating back to 2012, highlights the need for proactive measures to address this recurring issue. The Ecological Fund, established in 1981 to mitigate natural disasters, has faced controversy and misuse, calling for better management and allocation of resources to prevent avoidable emergencies.
