Supreme Court Confirms Chief Charl Emezi as Awaka Ruler

On January 27, 2026, the Supreme Court of Nigeria delivered a landmark judgment reaffirming Chief Charl Emezi's right to the traditional ruler position of the Awaka ancient kingdom, located in the Owerri North Local Government Area of Imo State. This ruling concluded a 16-year dispute over the ancestral ezeship stool, stemming from a legal battle that began in 1999 following the death of Chief Herbert Emezi, Chief Charl Emezi's uncle.

The case, identified as suit SC 325/2013, involved Chief Akujobi David Osuagwu and Chief Charl Emezi among others. The Supreme Court dismissed Osuagwu's appeal, thereby upholding the earlier judgment from the Owerri Division High Court, which had recognized Emezi as the authentic traditional ruler.

The court's decision was delivered by a panel including Justices Moham Lawal Bello, Chidieber Nwaoma Uwa, and others. Chief Charl Emezi expressed gratitude for the ruling, emphasizing the importance of the rule of law and unity within the Awaka community.
