Governors Mismanage Billions Amid Rising Poverty in Nigeria

Nigerian state governors are currently overseeing significant revenue opportunities, with a combined N16.64 trillion generated in 2025, of which N12.40 trillion (75%) came from the Federation Accounts Allocation Committee (FAAC). Despite this financial windfall, many governors are reportedly spending heavily on luxury projects and executive comforts rather than addressing pressing issues like food inflation, unemployment, and poor healthcare.

The 2025 State of States report by BudgIT indicated that the revenue for 35 states rose to N17.17 trillion in 2024, nearly double the N8.66 trillion recorded in 2023. The FAAC distribution increased significantly, with state governments receiving N6.713 trillion between January and November 2025.

Additionally, a special FAAC intervention for infrastructure and security provided about N2.9 trillion from 2024 to June 2026. Despite these resources, citizens are questioning the effectiveness of the spending, as many states focus on politically attractive projects rather than essential services.
