Veteran Hunters’ Commander Baba Gombi Dies at 100

Baba Gombi, born in 1926 in Bama, Borno State, and later relocated to Gombi, Adamawa State in 1979, passed away at the age of 100. He dedicated much of his life to combating Boko Haram insurgency and kidnapping, particularly during the intensification of Boko Haram attacks in 2015.

Gombi organized local hunters to coordinate efforts in defending communities against rising insecurity, playing a crucial role in reclaiming territories. He led rescue missions and intelligence gathering operations, often risking his life to free abducted victims.

Gombi rose to prominence as the national president of the Hunter Association, promoting collaboration with formal security institutions. In recognition of his bravery, he was conferred the traditional title of Sarkin Yakin Bindigan Arewa by the late Lamido Adamawa, Alhaji Aliyu Mustapha, in 1987.

He is survived by four wives, 36 children, 56 grandchildren, and 30 great-grandchildren. Tributes have poured in following his death, with Rabi U Baush, the Gombi State Chairman of the Hunter Association, describing the loss as profound.
