Babangida Refutes Mining Site Ownership Amid Tragic Deaths

Former military president General Ibrahim Babangida (Rtd.) has denied ownership of gold mining sites associated with the deaths of 37 miners who died while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). In a statement signed by Dr. David Adeniran from his media office, Babangida asserted that he does not own, lease, or possess any mineral rights or properties related to mining operations in Niger State or anywhere in Nigeria.

He emphasized that he has never engaged in mining activities and described claims to the contrary as fabrications. Babangida also refuted allegations from a purported survivor that he instructed workers to disregard local directives and continue mining operations.

He expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and the people of Niger State, while pledging full cooperation with the independent committee of inquiry initiated by the Niger State government and the Federal Ministry of Interior to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
