Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele has announced plans to sponsor a constitutional amendment bill that would establish a single six-year term for the President and state Governors, replacing the current arrangement of two four-year terms. The proposal is set to be among the first bills introduced when the 11th National Assembly is inaugurated following the 2027 general elections.

Bamidele's rationale centres on allowing elected leaders to concentrate on governance without the distraction of re-election campaigns. Under the existing two-term structure, he argues, officeholders often dedicate significant portions of their first term to political calculations and preparing for re-election, diverting attention from their primary responsibilities. A single longer term, he suggests, would eliminate these campaign-related interruptions.

The proposal forms part of a broader package of political and constitutional reforms intended to strengthen governance overall. During recent interviews, Bamidele also addressed other legislative priorities, including constitutional reforms aimed at tackling insecurity, improving legislative transparency, and enhancing anti-terrorism measures. He additionally called for the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation Commission to promptly publish salary and benefits information for public office holders across the country.

The bill's passage through the legislature is not guaranteed. Multiple sources indicate that the proposal has already generated opposition, with some Nigerians expressing concerns that it amounts to tenure elongation disguised as reform. Critics question whether the true motivation behind the single-term proposal serves broader governance interests or the political advantages of incumbent office seekers. The constitutional amendment process requires significant parliamentary support to advance.
