Bangladesh Court Sentences Ex-PM Sheikh Hasina To Death for Crimes Against Humanity

In a landmark legal ruling, a Bangladesh court sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death for crimes against humanity, including incitement to kill and failure to prevent atrocities. The verdict, delivered by Judge Golam Mortuza Mozumder in Dhaka, was met with approval from the audience.

Hasina, who refused to return from India for the trial, was convicted on multiple counts. The court also handed down a death sentence to her former interior minister, Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, who was tried in absentia.

The country has been experiencing political violence since Hasina's ouster, with over 1,400 people killed in security force crackdowns. Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam expressed hope that the judgment would satisfy the public's demand for accountability.
