ADB Announces $5 Billion Support Package for Bangladesh

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has unveiled a $5 billion support package for Bangladesh during a visit by ADB President Masato Kanda. This initiative aims to bolster integrated growth and development programs, focusing on improving connectivity and attracting investments.

Kanda met with Prime Minister Tariqu Rahman and senior government officials to discuss Bangladesh's development priorities, economic reforms, and external financing needs. The announcement comes as Bangladesh's import-reliant economy struggles due to the impacts of the U.S.-Israeli conflict and rising costs of fuel and liquefied natural gas.

The support package, equivalent to $1 billion annually, will be part of ADB's sovereign financing program for Bangladesh. During the visit, ADB also signed an agreement for a $1.4 billion loan, which will cover projects in energy, transport, climate resilience, and social development.

Additionally, ADB plans to increase its annual sovereign commitments to Bangladesh to between $2 billion and $2.4 billion to support investment-driven economic diversification.
