Bauchi Governor Visits Makinde Over Oyo Abductions, Blames Insecurity on Governance
Bala Mohammed travelled to Ibadan to express solidarity with Seyi Makinde after gunmen abducted schoolchildren and a teacher in Oyo State.
Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed visited his Oyo State counterpart Seyi Makinde in Ibadan on Sunday to offer support following the abduction of pupils and a teacher in the Oriir Local Government Area. The visit was framed as an expression of solidarity with Makinde's administration in the aftermath of the incident, which occurred on May 15, 2026.
During the meeting, Mohammed attributed Nigeria's deteriorating security environment to deficiencies in governance and widespread poverty across the country. He characterised the abductions as symptomatic of deeper systemic failures within the nation's institutional framework.
The Bauchi governor called for a comprehensive overhaul of the country's security architecture to better safeguard citizens and prevent future incidents. Mohammed's delegation included officials from the All Progressives Movement, among them the party's national chairman Yusuf Dantal and Bauchi's governorship candidate Yakubu Adamu.
The closed-door meeting between the two governors was followed by public statements emphasising the need for improved coordination among security agencies and stronger governance at national and state levels. The sources consulted contain minor inconsistencies regarding the exact number of abductees, with some reports citing 40 schoolchildren and others mentioning 45 pupils alongside the teacher.
Mohammed expressed optimism that the abducted individuals would be recovered, though no timeline for their release was provided. The visit underscored the interstate nature of Nigeria's security challenges and the collaborative efforts among state leaders to address them.
