Bauchi Stakeholders Propose Company Tax for WASH Funding

Stakeholders in Bauchi State have proposed the introduction of a tax on companies to boost funding for water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) services. This proposal emerged from the WASH Joint Sector Review (JSR) held from May 12 to 14, 2023, and aims to establish a WASH fund by convening a donor roundtable.

The meeting included representatives from government ministries, local government councils, civil society organizations, and the private sector. Despite progress in water supply and sanitation campaigns, the sector faces significant challenges, including inadequate financing and poor maintenance culture.

The stakeholders urged the Bauchi State Government to prioritize WASH issues, increase funding, and implement stronger policies. Recommendations include establishing a water regulatory commission and enhancing coordination among local government councils.

The stakeholders also called for a revival of the WASH media network and public awareness campaigns to promote hygiene practices. The agreed actions aim to achieve open defecation-free status across local government areas by 2026-2027.
