WaterAid Urges Bauchi to Develop Sanitation Sites

WaterAid has called on the Bauchi State government to urgently develop designated faecal sludge dumping sites to promote sanitation and prevent disease outbreaks. Mr.

Nanpet Chuktu, head of the organization, made this appeal during a stakeholder workshop aimed at assessing risks along the sanitation service chain. Although the state has allocated sites, delays in development have led to indiscriminate disposal of faecal sludge in residential areas and farmland, posing significant public health hazards.

Chuktu urged relevant ministries and agencies responsible for water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) activities to enforce regulatory mechanisms for effective management of the sanitation service chain. He highlighted the economic opportunities in proper sanitation management, which could create jobs and improve the well-being of the community.

Mr. Helen Abah, Executive Director of Dec, expressed concerns over the challenges in loan recovery for sanitation projects and reiterated the importance of encouraging households to construct improved toilets to eliminate open defecation.
